Frequently Asked Questions

No Guesswork. Just Straight Answers.

From auditions to class structures to everything in between, here’s where you’ll find clear answers to our most asked questions.

Our goal is to ensure that every actor we enroll has the skills to excel in that given class. So, for the early-career classes, an audition/interview is required. For the veteran actors, their resume, reel and/or a reference from an industry professional may suffice in lieu of an audition. But in those cases, we still want to meet everyone. As our work is so prescriptive, the meeting allows us to have a greater understanding of each actor’s goals. And since we do not allow audits [see below], the meeting allows the actor to ask questions and learn more before enrolling.

Classes at The Freeman Studio are small and intimate. To preserve the quality of that environment, we do not allow anyone who is not enrolled in the class to sit in and observe. If you have a friend interested in the studio, we greatly appreciate you referring them to us. You are our greatest resource. They can schedule a New Actor Meeting and get set-up in the appropriate class by emailing us at info@thefreemanstudio.com (New York) or info@thefreemanstudio.ca (Toronto). We look forward to meeting them!

We do offer free events where you can come and experience what the studio is like and meet current members.

We run on 4-week, 6-week and 8-week cycles. You can keep your spot, take a break, or rejoin later. No long-term obligations or mandatory introductory classes.

Yes, the Studio offers both weekly or biweekly payment plans. Please let the studio coordinator know during the enrollment process if you’d like to set one up.

All enrollments in classes are by invite only, meaning you need to be approved for a class before being able to enroll in it. To be approved for a class or to inquire more about it, click the “enroll now” button underneath that class or workshop and fill out the Enrollment Inquiry Form. A member of our staff will follow up with you ASAP.

Once you’ve been invited: Log in to your TFS Account, find the next cycle of the class or workshop that you are enrolling in, and click “Sign Up Now!” If you run into any problems please email us and we’ll help you solve the problem swiftly.

Some of our classes are on-going, meaning actors presently in that class will always have “priority” to re-join the next cycle. If a class fills up with the previous roster, we will place you on the waitlist. As soon as a spot opens up, we will work hard to get you in asap.

All actors must meet a criteria based on experience, talent, demeanor, and ambition. In addition, they must be in the thick of their careers or actively pursuing that goal. It is not a place for the occasional actor.

For early career actors, we offer a Start Acting program for foundational training and technique.

You’ll be emailed a waitlist confirmation. Classes are opened to the waitlist one week prior to the first date of the class. If a spot becomes available to you, that is when you will be notified. Actors currently enrolled in the class will always have “priority” to register until the final class meeting of each cycle. To be added to the waitlist, please email the studio coordinator at info@thefreemanstudio.com (New York) or info@thefreemanstudio.ca (Toronto).

Welcome back! Though students currently in class will maintain their “priority” status to re-enroll, we will do everything we can to get you back in asap. Email us to let us know when you’d like to come back to class and we’ll let you know if a spot is available.

Use our contact form or email us at info@thefreemanstudio.com (New York) or info@thefreemanstudio.ca (Toronto). We look forward to hearing from you!

The Freeman Studio was founded for actors who already have a way of working, therefore we do not seek to replace and/or rebuild actors. Rather, we encourage what works for each actor and give them new techniques for what is lacking or could use strengthening. These techniques are based on basic Stanislavskian concepts. However, we are familiar with most acting techniques and are able to communicate prescriptively with each actor. These same techniques are used in the early career classes to lay a foundation for the future.

No gurus. No ego. Our mentor/teachers are experienced working actors who offer honest feedback, rigorous training, and a collaborative atmosphere.

We have studios in New York City and Toronto. Check our Locations page for specific addresses and directions.

Core to our mission is giving back to the community. Our FREEman Fridays are free events with inspiring and notable actors, as well as industry professionals. Our FREEminars are free workshop intensives often with guest teachers in disciplines not always available in our curriculum.
All of these are open to the public – and are a great way to meet us!

We regularly offer workshops, panels, and Q&As with industry professionals. They’re open to the public, and a great way to meet us.

The preferred method of payment is by keeping a credit card on file in your account. That way if a spot becomes available in a class that you’re on the waitlist for, you can claim the spot faster with using the saved information. We do not accept cash or checks.

***The Freeman Studio protects any personal financial information that you share with us. If you make a purchase on- line, we will use your credit card number only to process your payment and will not use it for marketing purposes. For reasons of security, credit card information is not stored on our Web Server. We will retain order information for our records, but this information is never shared with third parties.***

When signing up for a class, you are also committing to the Hold Date. It is very important that you note this date so if a teacher has to reschedule a class, we automatically use the Hold Date as the make-up date. We will notify the class immediately if the hold date is going to be used.

If you can NOT make a class because of illness, changes in work schedule, an unexpected audition, rehearsal, or performance, there will not be a refund granted. Your presence in class directly affects the dynamic, especially in those classes that require scene partnering. TFS expects that every effort will be made to honor the class schedule, even if it means you can only be present for a portion of class. If a class is canceled beyond the Hold Date, and you are unable to attend the rescheduled make-up session, you will be given credit towards a future class at TFS, with no expiration.

Enrollment priority will always be given to those taking the full cycle. If you want to enroll knowing you will miss a class and it is approved, we will inform the instructor. Please note you will still be paying for the full session. The Freeman Studio does not offer pro-rates for our classes and workshops. In last minute emergencies, please contact the studio asap to update us on your schedule as a courtesy to your fellow actors. If necessary, we can get in touch with your scene partner.

The goal of the studio is to have every actor present work in every class. The analogy we use is that of being on the swim team: you need to be in the water every time you are at the pool.

Therefore, if an actor is left without a partner for any reason, another actor in the class will be asked to step in (on book) so that the scene can still be presented. Alternatively, that actor can choose to bring in a solo piece, such as a monologue or sides for an upcoming audition, if they’d prefer.
